I bought this book thinking it was going to be a satire of last year's runaway erotic hit 50 Shades of Grey. Although I don't usually pick up this sort of book, I highly enjoyed it on its own merits.Third year University student Damian Serr takes over his friend's pool cleaning business, forcing him to learn the finer points of customer service. He cleans people's pools with his shirt off, since this is proving to be a hot summer in Toronto. Since most of the customers are women, Damian has to get used to the hardship of having his employers watching him while dressed in a string bikini or a skimpy beach coverup.
The university chums trade stories about their escapades over beers every Friday night. Little does he know, virgin Damian is about to embark on a summer of secret nooky like he had never dreamed of. Enter Alexis Rosse, multimillionaire 30-ish widow with a very dirty pool and and even dirtier mind. Alexis relieves Damian of his virginity and discovers he has "natural talent."
The sex scenes in One shade of Red are explicit, relentless, and often hilarious. The characters seem to have the stamina of Wimbledon finalists, spending many hours of the day exploring each other's bodies. Reading the book on my Kindle meant I did not have to hide it in a brown paper bag. When people heard me laughing, they had no idea what was so entertaining. I mean NO idea.
What I liked most about the book was young Damian, who has a classic coming-of-age experience during the summer of his hot affair with Alexis. This relationship proves so intense it can only have consequences for all his other relationships, and the events that follow force him to look at himself in a new way and decide what he really wants. Damian is a fascinating character ultimately, and the book is a deliciously erotic read with something extra.

This book was intended to be a spoof of "Fifty Shades of Grey", but I can tell you that Scott Bury managed to write a book that is much better, more interesting, deeper, and better written than the whole Fifty Shades Trilogy put together.
Damian is a naïve young man that faces a whole summer with the uncertainty of what those months would bring. Worried about making enough money for his next year at college, he couldn't imagine that taking care of his flatmate Nick's business when he left the city would lead him to live the summer of his life. Meeting Ms. Alexis Rosse would turn his world upside down. The expected uneventful summer becomes a real adventure, with plenty of hot sex encounters, love issues, handling friends and overcoming obstacles.
This book is extremely well-written; so well-written that it flows quite easily, hooking the reader right from the beginning. I had real problems to stop reading it, and indeed it just took me three seatings to read the whole book.
One of the best things about this book is that every single character has a distinctive voice, and that fits really well into the story and makes characterisation very good. You can know who is talking and get the mental picture just by reading how they talk. It's brilliant.
This is an erotic book, so yes, there is sex. A lot of sex. Knowing the previous books by Scott Bury, I must admit that I was a bit surprised. However, now I can safely say that he did a great job; the sex scenes are steamy hot and don't interfere with the plot story. I mean, this book is not only about the sex; it deals a lot with Damian's struggles with his feelings and with trying to do the right thing.
So kudos to Scott Bury for creating a well-crafted erotic tale about love and the ways of the world, as the Classics would say. While reading this book, I didn't think even once about Fifty Shades, and you would agree with me that there is no better compliment than that.

Although this is not my normal type of read I have to say my curiosity got the better of me. The moment I heard about this book I just had to read it. Damian is a University student and a rather naive one to say the least. He takes on his friends pool cleaning business and realizes pretty early on that there is a lot more to the business than just cleaning pools! Damian is a virgin and his life is about to change in ways he could never of imagined. He was about to embark on every young hormonal man's dream.
With Marathon sex scenes throughout, Damian finds himself having an affair with the very hot and sexy Alexis and lives out a summer he will never ever forget. A very sexy read, I had a smile on my face most of the way through. I will be watching with great anticipation to see what the author comes up with next.
Every once in a while it's fun to read an erotic novel written by a man. ) One Shade of Red is a fun, very well-written story about a young man's first sexual experiences. Okay, so it's a bit of a fantasy. Pool boy meets sexually adventurous woman willing to show him the ropes. But it's a fun, entertaining read, if totally unbelievable. (Then again, most erotica is unbelievable.) My only real problem with the story was the way Damian cheats on his virginal girlfriend. Yes, she was a total prude and completely unlikable, but he should have just cut her loose. Overall, One Shade of Red was a great escapist read.
